A Washington couple was on their way home early Saturday morning when their car plunged into a sinkhole at a Vancouver intersection, according to a city spokesperson.

Authorities responded to the intersection around 1:15 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a car driving into a sinkhole.

Katelyn Bicknell and her boyfriend, Kevin, were on their way home from grocery shopping when their car became stuck in a large hole, with large amounts of water bubbling around them, the couple told KPTV.

Bicknell tried to open the door, pushing aside the rushing water.

Vancouver police said Bicknell and Kevin were able to safely escape through the trunk and side door.

“It was like a movie, I felt like I was in a movie,” Bicknell told KPTV. “We took a right turn toward Washington, but as soon as we turned, we went straight into the hole. It felt like we were on a roller coaster as we went down the big pothole, and the car just started filling up with water. .”

Bicknell called the police and watched as he and Kevin drove the car further into the sinkhole, waiting for help.

Officials said the sinkhole was caused by a water main break.
