Texas Court Orders Release of Uvalde Shooting Records

A Texas Court of Appeal Judge mandated that Uvalde County and its school districts release documents related to the 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School, affirming earlier court decisions.

A group of 18 news organizations, including the Texas Tribune, took legal action against the Uvalde school districts and county in 2022. They sought access to 911 call logs and communications during the incident, particularly concerning body camera footage.

The law enforcement response to the tragic shooting, which claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers, has faced intense scrutiny. This is largely due to communication failures that delayed the police response while the gunman remained inside classrooms with the victims.

Uvalde County District Attorney Christina Mitchell opposed the release of these records, citing a criminal case against former Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Aredondo. She argued that sharing the documents might interfere with ongoing legal proceedings.

However, Judge Belia Meza of the Texas Fourth Court of Appeals noted in her ruling that there were insufficient grounds to withhold the records based on pending criminal cases or other matters.

Meza’s opinion highlighted that the entities involved provided minimal justification for restricting access, referring only to the investigation and civil cases without offering substantial legal reasoning.

Arredondo is facing several felony charges related to the case, with a trial date set for October.

In a statement, media law attorney Laura Plazer, representing the coalition of news organizations, remarked that the ruling sends a significant message to officials—that vague legal claims cannot obstruct transparency.

“The public has been waiting for over three years for clarity about what went wrong that day,” Plazer stated. “This ruling is a step towards those answers and aims to prevent future tragedies.”

A spokesperson for the Uvalde School District mentioned that the matter of public records will be addressed at a school board meeting scheduled for July 21. The Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office did not provide any comments regarding the case. The judge’s order did not specify a timeline for the release of the records.
