A fashion misstep sparked controversy.
An 18-year-old who labels herself a “socialist socialite”—someone fond of wearing furs and pricey designer attire—received backlash for ridiculing Jennifer Hegseth, the wife of a military leader, for opting for an affordable gown during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Ella Devi stirred online reactions by pointing out that Jennifer Hegseth’s dusty pink dress bore a striking resemblance to one found on the discount site Temu.
Devi took to X, deriding Hegseth’s choice by sharing a screenshot of a similar dress that costs less than $20, claiming, “Pete Hegseth’s wife wore a Tem dress to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner (I’m not kidding).” Yet her attempt to poke fun at what she perceived as a budget fashion choice backfired.
Comments quickly piled up, with some defending Hegseth. “Did you think the left was about ‘ripping off the rich’? Now you want to dunk on someone who didn’t waste $10,000 on a dress you’ll only wear once?” asserted right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
One user went as far as to remark that the far left’s criticism seems to now extend to the “fashion police.” Another user echoed similar sentiments by saying, “Hegseth is a work of s–t, but ACAB [All Cops Are Bastards] Including the fashion police.”
Criticism continued, aimed at Devi’s apparent inconsistency. Users highlighted her penchant for flaunting luxury brands, which seemed at odds with her alleged socialist values. “This woman is a self-proclaimed ‘socialist’. She spends her time mocking conservative women for not spending more on clothes,” one person noted on X.
Comments poured in about the questionable ethics of her criticisms. “Socialists who humiliate their fellow women with fashion? Where do we even begin with someone so broken inside?” one commenter expressed her dismay. “Maybe public humiliation is a start. Shame on you, you classless, hypocritical succubus.”
Supporters of Hegseth joined the conversation too, proudly sharing their own budget-friendly fashion finds. Shoshana Wiseman chimed in, “My perfume is from Amazon, and it costs $5, and I always get compliments on it. I even wore a dress I bought from Amazon to a gala party. Wear what you like, whether snobs like it or not.”
As for Hegseth’s dress, its exact origin remained unclear.
