Senator Ted Cruz Critiques UN Report on Israel
Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz has expressed strong disapproval of a recent UN report claiming Israel is guilty of genocide. He remarked that both the Trump administration and Congress have the means to impose sanctions on those behind the report.
The United Nations International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories issued a document on Tuesday, stating that “the Israeli state is failing to punish genocide” regarding the situation in Gaza.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Cruz characterized the UN’s announcement as yet another anti-Semitic attack similar to those aimed at Israel during its responses to Hamas’s acts of violence. He added that such efforts endanger U.S. national security by compromising Israel’s ability to defend itself against Hamas, who have harmed Americans, and by fostering international laws that challenge Israel.
Anne Bayefsky, the director of the Touro Institute on Human Rights, voiced her concerns to Fox News Digital, saying the UN’s latest findings promote a warped narrative against Jews. She suggested that the report offers a simplified view of the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7, framing them as understandable reactions to past Israeli actions.
According to Bayefsky, the Commission failed to hold Hamas responsible for its crimes and particularly glossed over the critical elements of the violence that took place on October 7.
Salo Aizenberg, who leads Media WatchDog Group HonestReporting, challenged the assertions made in the COI report, questioning why Israel would allow extensive vaccinations for young children in Gaza if it aimed to annihilate them. He also criticized the report for ignoring the significant number of fatalities attributed to Hamas and other militant groups.
The COI report specifically calls on Israel to extend humanitarian aid access in Gaza and halt food distribution through certain organizations, which it accuses of being detrimental to the well-being of Palestinians.
However, recent UN data highlights that a large number of UN aid trucks have been unable to deliver supplies due to armed thefts. During a similar timeframe, the humanitarian group reported distributing millions of meals to Palestinians at secure sites.
The COI currently implicates several Israeli officials in genocide allegations but a member of the Commission acknowledged that numerous public statements from Israeli figures could also be construed as inciting genocide.
In response to inquiries regarding the report, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that determining genocide is not within his purview but belongs to judicial bodies. He labeled the situation as unacceptable on moral, political, and legal grounds.
Critics like Bayefsky have argued that U.S. legal restrictions on funding the COI should be more robust in order to protect both the United States and Israel from perceived threats posed by the organization.
Fox News Digital also sought a response from the State Department about their intention to approve or limit COI members’ activities. As of now, there has been no reply.
