Trump’s Lighthearted Remarks on Rubio and Cuba Relations

In light of rising tensions between the United States and Cuba, President Donald Trump recently reacted to a joke on social media suggesting that Secretary of State Marco Rubio could be Cuba’s next leader. He responded with a casual “That’s great!” on his Truth Social platform.

This light banter coincided with heightened U.S. pressure on Havana, especially following the recent arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the socialist leader of Venezuela. Cuban officials criticized Trump’s comments, interpreting them as a display of what they call “hegemonic arrogance.”

On Sunday, Trump responded to a user who claimed that Rubio would become president of Cuba, a comment that quickly circulated on social media due to Rubio’s significant role during Trump’s administration.

Adding to the seriousness of the situation, Trump issued a stern warning to Cuba, asserting, “No more oil or money going to Cuba, no more!” He urged the Cuban government to negotiate quickly, especially since Venezuela’s financial support—an economic lifeline for the island—was ending.

“Cuba has relied on substantial amounts of oil and gold from Venezuela for years. In exchange, Cuba provided security services to Venezuela’s last two dictators, but that’s over! Most of those Cubans died in last week’s U.S. strike, and Venezuela no longer needs protection from the criminals who have kept it hostage for so long. Venezuela has the United States now to protect it, and we will protect them. There’s no more oil or money to go to Cuba. I encourage them to strike a deal urgently.”

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, previously involved in the Trump administration, also chimed in, supporting the lighthearted notion that Rubio could hold several leadership positions across various countries.

The entire scenario hints at intensifying efforts from Washington to apply pressure on socialist and communist regimes in the region, which often face accusations related to drug trafficking, even if communicated with a blend of humor.

Rubio currently serves in multiple advisory roles, including secretary of state and acting national security adviser. He had previously led the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) until its discontinuation last year.

In response to Trump’s remarks, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated on X, “Cuba is a free, independent, and sovereign nation,” stressing that “no one will dictate our actions.”

He further rejected negotiations beyond the most technical level and stated that those who exploit human life for profit lack the moral authority to criticize Cuba.

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez backed this viewpoint, asserting that “rights and justice favor Cuba,” while criticizing the U.S. for behaving like a global hegemon. Cuban state channels have portrayed Rubio as excessively fixated on changing the regime, linking this moment to the U.S. agenda to undermine their government.

Cuban officials interpret Trump’s online comments not as simple jokes but rather a potential precursor to increased military or economic actions against Cuba.

Rubio, who is of Cuban descent and noted for his tough stance on Havana, hasn’t commented on the joke but has expressed concerns about Cuba’s precarious situation. In a recent discussion, he described the island’s leadership as “incompetent and senile,” indicating that without Venezuelan assistance, the regime might crumble.

“Cuba is a wretched place, governed by incompetent old men, or sometimes just incompetent men.”

A meme linked to Rubio has gone viral, showing an awkward moment from a previous meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, capturing Rubio looking uncomfortable while reporters were present.

At one point, a strange rumor suggested Rubio had taken over as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, which he later humorously denied, asserting his focus remains on global issues.

Trump’s recent comments follow a strategic review by his administration regarding the Caribbean, prompted by the significant political shift following Maduro’s ousting.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are currently under indictment for drug-related crimes in New York City, maintaining their innocence amid these serious allegations.

“If I were part of the Cuban government, I’d feel at least somewhat worried,” Rubio mentioned to reporters after the successful operation that led to Maduro’s capture.
