Bloomberg Endorses Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
Former Mayor of New York City, Mike Bloomberg, is supporting Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming Democratic primary for the city’s mayoral race. Bloomberg, a billionaire known for his media empire and a failed presidential bid in 2020, made his endorsement public just two weeks ahead of the primary scheduled for June 24, with early voting kicking off on June 14.
Bloomberg expressed concern for urban challenges faced since his departure from office, especially in light of the pandemic. He believes that Cuomo’s management experience makes him stand out among the candidates. In a statement, he acknowledged their past political disagreements but emphasized Cuomo’s strengths as a leader, saying, “Of all the candidates, Andrew has the skills our city needs to move us forward.” It’s interesting to see how endorsements play such a pivotal role, even amid prior controversies.
The two met earlier this week at Bloomberg Media’s office while Cuomo was in town for a radio segment. Bloomberg referred to New York City politicians as “Excellent Politicians” and highlighted the resilience both cities have shown post-crisis during his tenure.
Cuomo, who stepped down as governor in 2021 amid scandals, is looking for political redemption, especially after facing numerous allegations of sexual harassment and scrutiny over his COVID-19 policies. Recently, the Justice Department initiated a criminal investigation regarding his administration’s actions during the pandemic.
Despite these setbacks, Cuomo remains a prominent figure in the polls, even before formally declaring his candidacy on March 1. Bloomberg, having shifted his political affiliations throughout his career—from Republican to independent to Democrat—shares some ideological ground with Cuomo, particularly in moderating stances.
Cuomo isn’t the only candidate in this race, as he faces competition from Zoran Mamdani, a younger progressive candidate who’s gaining traction. Mamdani, a state legislator from Queens, recently secured support from prominent figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This backing is seen as a strategic move to unite the progressive vote against more moderate candidates like Cuomo.
With a diverse pool of candidates, this primary promises to be an insightful test of the city’s political landscape, showcasing the struggle between progressive ideals and more traditional approaches to leadership.
