Maryland Man Turns Himself In After Allegedly Vandalizing Bakery

A man from Maryland, accused of throwing a beer keg through the front window of a well-known cupcake shop, presented himself to the police after his father recognized him from videos shared by the authorities, according to court records.

Charles Joseph Ali, hailing from Rockville, faces felony charges for damaging property after he allegedly launched a metal barrel at the window of Georgetown Cupcakes, located in Washington, D.C., on a Sunday night.

His father identified him following the release of surveillance images intended to solicit help in identifying the suspect, as noted in documents obtained by FOX News Digital.

On Thursday, Ali accompanied by his father and attorney, went to the Second District Police Station to surrender.

During his court appearance on Friday, Ali pleaded not guilty to the charge, and the judge allowed his release pending trial, though instructed him to avoid Georgetown Cupcakes.

In a related matter, Ali faces allegations connected to property damage involving another local store from April, but those charges have not yet been formally placed against him.

Images shared by the bakery depicted the wreckage at the entrance, with metal barrels scattered and broken glass everywhere.

The damage to Georgetown Cupcakes, which gained fame from the Discovery series “DC Cupcakes,” had employees momentarily fearing for their safety as they were inside during the incident, which resulted in long lines outside the shop.

In joint statements made on Thursday, owners Sophie Lamontagne and Catherine Berman emphasized that the store remained operational and would continue its usual routines.

Despite the vandalism, the bakery reopened just hours post-incident, with plywood temporarily placed over the shattered windows.

Berman recounted an employee’s frightening encounter with the barrel-tosser around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, stating she hid in the back as chaos unfolded outside. “She was really scared,” Berman explained, adding that the emotional impact has been significant.

Footage documented the suspect’s actions, showing him throwing the barrel and departing the area. Earlier attempts to displace a metal trash can were unsuccessful, and additional video revealed him retrieving the keg from outside a nearby residence.

Berman expressed concern, stating, “He’s violent, and… we live in a civil society where respect for others and their property is essential. Clearly, he’s not adhering to that.” Ali is set to appear in court again on June 11.
