Cybercriminals target major financial platforms — users face significant losses

Major Attacks Hit Binance and Polymarket

On Thursday, two significant financial platforms were targeted in attacks just hours apart. Binance, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, and Polymarket, a prediction market platform, both experienced substantial breaches resulting in massive losses—totaling billions—from user accounts.

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange with approximately 335 million users, is a particularly attractive target for hackers. Polymarket also holds a prominent position as a leading prediction market, surpassing competitors like Kalshi.

Binance announced it would allocate $6.34 billion to cover the losses inflicted upon its users.

The attack on Binance occurred first. An official statement from the company’s X account mentioned:

Our teams are aware of reports of a potential security issue and are actively investigating. User funds are completely safe. Our security personnel are examining the matter urgently, and we will share updates through official Binance channels as we gather confirmed information. Users should be wary of scams and avoid unverified links, messages, or requests for account information.

However, this assurance crumbled as the situation unfolded. Within a day, Binance disclosed that it would need to set aside $6.34 billion to compensate users for their losses, pledging to repay in full.

Currently, users can deposit funds into their Binance accounts, but withdrawals remain suspended while the company collaborates with law enforcement and blockchain specialists to investigate. Early findings suggest the breach is connected to a North Korean hacking group known as TraderTraitor.

Simultaneously, Polymarket experienced its own hacking incident, resulting in $2.7 million being stolen from 737 user accounts. This breach was facilitated by a vulnerability in a third-party system that allowed attackers to interfere with active trading sessions and extract funds.

Similar to Binance, Polymarket has committed to reimbursing affected users. Trading on the platform was briefly halted but has since resumed operations.

While the situation with Polymarket appears to have settled, the Binance breach remains an ongoing concern, especially as the month wraps up a turbulent October. Further updates from Blaze News are expected early next week as more details continue to emerge.
