D.C. councilman accused of bribery criticizes Trump's federal intervention

Trump’s Control Over DC Law Enforcement Faces Scrutiny

President Donald Trump’s recent move to take federal control of law enforcement in Washington, DC has sparked criticism from various quarters.

Treyon White, a newly sworn-in member of the city council, was elected despite pending trials related to federal bribery charges set for 2026. When questioned about Trump’s influence on the local law enforcement agency, White contended that DC leaders are already quite capable and “responsible.”

“We have one of the strongest budgets of any city over the last 20 years,” White stated confidently. “With an AAA bond rating, we’ve demonstrated financial responsibility. The real obstacles in DC have come from outside interference over the past four decades.”

In February, the DC Council expelled White following the emergence of bribery charges against him. However, he regained his position in July, campaigning on claims that the FBI had wrongfully targeted him. Recently, he expressed concerns about federal agencies’ actions, suggesting they were “killing” him.

White informed reporters on Friday, “I know the FBI is following me, but I believe they want me gone.”

Trump is taking steps to “federate” local National Guard units and send additional resources to address crime and homelessness in the city. Some local officials, such as attorney Janine Piro, have criticized rising juvenile delinquency and the perception among some that they could act without consequence.

White is facing accusations from federal authorities of accepting a $156,000 bribe, with his trial slated to begin in January 2026. He has denied any wrongdoing, even in light of video evidence that seemingly shows him taking cash.

The investigation revolves around allegations that White pressured the Office of Safety and Engagement in Neighborhoods (ONSE) and the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) to manipulate contracts related to violence prevention initiatives.

Despite not having been convicted of a felony, White managed to run in a special election. He declared in his victory speech, “We’ve made it clear that Treyon White is here,” reflecting a narrative of resilience after setbacks in his political career.
