Daines: Israel has a clear goal to eliminate Hamas following the attack in Qatar

Senator Daines Travels to Israel Following IDF Strike in Qatar

Senator Steve Daines from Montana is heading to Israel after the country’s recent military action that targeted Hamas leaders in Qatar.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) reported a strike on Tuesday intended to eliminate high-ranking Hamas leadership, but the operation occurred over 1,300 miles away in Doha, Qatar. This is significant since Qatar has been instrumental in supporting ceasefire negotiations and the return of hostages amid the ongoing conflict, particularly after the attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

Daines, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed strong views on the threat posed by Hamas, likening it to a pervasive illness that Israel must eliminate. He emphasized that if the situation were reversed—if 1,200 Americans were in danger—Americans would react decisively. His comments reflect a deep-seated belief in the necessity of strong action.

“The Israelis, as we’ve witnessed with Iran or Hezbollah, don’t seek permission to act,” he stated, recalling how the U.S. pursued Osama bin Laden without consulting Pakistan. After the strike, former President Donald Trump revealed his dissatisfaction with the situation, indicating that he was “very unhappy” with the outcome despite the return of hostages.

In response to the Israeli strike, Qatar condemned it as a violation of international laws and a significant threat to the safety of its residents. Daines had initially planned his trip to Israel to celebrate archaeological discoveries, including an ancient pilgrimage road. His past visits had previously focused on advancements in Israeli archaeology before the ongoing conflict escalated.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee were also expected to join Daines on this trip, which now comes at a particularly tense time.

Daines expressed optimism about potentially meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu soon, even as he remained uncertain about the impacts of the strike on ceasing hostilities. He remarked on the ongoing challenges posed by Hamas, indicating that the organization’s leadership, control mechanisms, and strategies need to be thoroughly dismantled for Israel to achieve lasting security. His statements convey a sense of urgency amid the complex geopolitical landscape.

Fox News Digital reached out for a comment from the State Department but has not yet received a response.
