Dave Portnoy criticizes ABC reporter for ‘ambush’ interview: ‘I forgot how much I dislike journalists’

Portnoy’s Tense Exchange with ABC Reporter

Dave Portnoy, the owner of Barstool Sports, found himself at odds with a reporter from an ABC affiliate during an interview concerning an incident at a bar in Philadelphia.

A video segment from Inside Barstool Sansom Street gained traction, featuring offensive signs that some claimed were intended for patrons who had booked bottle service. Portnoy, being Jewish, expressed his disgust at the situation, suggesting the bar staff should have seen it coming. He opted to take disciplinary action, letting go of two waitresses involved and suggesting an extreme form of retribution for the customer.

On Monday, Portnoy shared that he agreed to an interview with WPVI after they, as he described, “begged” him for it. He accused the outlet of selectively changing reporters and claimed they portrayed him and Barstool Sports as part of a wider issue regarding anti-Semitism, laying blame on white men in general.

“Reporters suggested that I, along with Barstool and white men, were responsible for this,” he stated alongside a video.

The exchange became heated when Portnoy challenged the reporter’s statements about university campuses and anti-Semitic behavior. He questioned the origins of her claims, pointing out their reliance on a source from the University of Virginia that he believed lacked credibility.

“I don’t entirely agree with your statement,” he told her. “Who’s really stirring up hatred nowadays? You claim it’s me and my organization?”

The reporter seemed taken aback and refused to respond directly to his queries.

“I’m a journalist too,” she insisted. “I’m simply asking you questions.”

Portnoy responded with frustration, stating, “What does that even mean? Can you just answer my question?” The back-and-forth left the reporter visibly uncomfortable as she said he wasn’t running the interview.

Ultimately, Portnoy decided to end the conversation and closed his laptop, expressing his disdain for the media. “F*ck ABC,” he declared, indicating his longstanding frustration with journalists.

The legitimacy of the reporter’s claims remains uncertain, amid prior criticisms of Portnoy and Barstool Sports from various academic perspectives.

In a related note, a 2022 article from the University of Virginia’s press labeled Barstool Sports as problematic, calling out perceived sexism and racism associated with the platform’s culture.

Portnoy’s contentious relationship with media outlets continues to fuel debate, with contrasting views on his influence and the actions of his organization.
