Dave Portnoy criticizes Justin Herbert following the Chargers' defeat

Dave Portnoy is once again criticizing Justin Herbert after the Chargers quarterback faced another early playoff exit on Sunday.

The founder of Barstool Sports, who is a die-hard Patriots supporter, took to social media to slam Herbert following last year’s playoff defeat to the Texans. This time, he didn’t hold back after the Chargers fell 16-3 to New England at Gillette Stadium.

Portnoy remarked, “I’ve been a Justin Herbert truth teller since day one. His protection wasn’t too bad in the first half, or really, the first three quarters. He just hasn’t been a big game player.”

Herbert completed 19 of 31 passes for a mere 159 yards against the Patriots. Pro Football Focus reported that he fumbled twice, missed one throw, was sacked six times, and faced pressure on 30 of his 31 attempts.

Now sitting at 0-3 in his playoff career, Portnoy has repeatedly been critical of the 27-year-old over the years. His harshest remarks came after Herbert threw four interceptions during the Chargers’ loss to Houston in the 2025 playoffs.

At that time, Portnoy had said, “He’s the worst. I don’t care what tools he has. You know who had the tools? Jeff George. That sucks. And JaMarcus Russell. That also sucked.”

With Sunday’s defeat, Herbert’s playoff record remains disappointing at 0-3.

Herbert himself acknowledged the team’s shortcomings after the game, stating, “We didn’t get points when it mattered most.”
