Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy and his mother were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday after their boat suddenly lost power and became adrift off the coast of Nantucket.
“Your men almost lost Captain Dave today,” the 47-year-old said. Revealed in video It was posted on social media.
The naval commotion began when Portnoy unhooked his 28-foot boat from a pier at one of the harbors on a luxury resort island in Massachusetts and discovered the boat’s engine and breakers had stopped.
“We had no electricity, no radio, no anchor, nothing and a strong wind,” he recalls in the two-minute video. “The next thing I knew, Captain Dave was lost at sea.”
Mr Portnoy, who splashed out a whopping $42 million on a beachfront property on the island last year, said he tried to steer his boat through the busy harbour before screaming for help and eventually firing a flare to attract attention.
Eventually, a female sailing nearby spotted him and boarded his boat.
“She came on board Captain Dave’s boat and she was like, ‘Can I take your TikTok?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t have time for TikToks,’” he said.
The woman then radioed the Coast Guard for help, Portnoy said.
Coast Guard members conducting a training exercise nearby helped tow his boat to shore.
“Captain Dave is alive and well to tell another story,” Portnoy said in a statement thanking the agency.
The Boston-based First Coast Guard District later responded to Portnoy’s storytime video, Tweet: “You’re welcome, Dave.”
“Please give my best to Miss Peaches and remember to stay safe on your boat!” the agency added, referring to Portnoy’s rescued 6-year-old American pit bull.
Meanwhile, Portnoy claimed he might be unsure about getting on a boat again.
“It’s a dangerous game, and the seas are rough, my friend,” he said. “Captain Dave may never sail again.”
