Portnoy Calls for Belichick’s Retirement After UNC’s Loss
After a disappointing 28-12 defeat to Wake Forest, Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, expressed his frustration regarding University of North Carolina’s head coach, Bill Belichick. Portnoy took to X to declare, “Belichick needs to retire. This is disgusting. I don’t even know if he knows the score or his position.”
The Tar Heels struggled immensely during the game, allowing a touchdown in each quarter while failing to score any themselves. In a notable moment, Wake Forest wide receiver Carlos Hernandez took advantage of a fumble, returning it for a touchdown.
UNC’s only points came from kicker Rese Verhoff, who impressively connected on field goals from distances of 40, 57, 42, and 47 yards.
This season has been marred by controversy for Belichick, with the Tar Heels posting a 4-6 record, putting their chances for a bowl game at risk for the first time in six years.
Speculation about Belichick’s future has intensified following the team’s lackluster performance and claims of dysfunction within the program. He had previously dismissed rumors of a departure, saying they were “completely false,” and reaffirmed his commitment to the team earlier this week amid ongoing discussions about the Giants and their head coach.
Portnoy, who has not held back in his criticisms before, reiterated his stance on Belichick’s potential in college football. Last month, he suggested on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff that, “I think this experiment will be successful. I want Belichick out of college football. He’s my idol. He’s won me a lot of Super Bowls.” Yet, despite the challenges, it seems unlikely that the 73-year-old will be stepping down anytime soon.
As for the rest of the season, North Carolina State needs to secure wins in their next two games to extend their bowl-winning streak. The Tar Heels are set to face Duke at home before traveling to North Carolina State for their final matchup on November 29.
