Portnoy Critiques Fever Coach White Amid Controversy

Stephanie White has come under fire, particularly from Dave Portnoy, a prominent fan of Caitlin Clark. Portnoy openly expressed his discontent following a heated moment in defense of White, her players, and the WNBA community after a hard foul incident during a game.

On Tuesday evening, in a tweet filled with frustration, Portnoy commented on White’s lengthy defense, which came in light of DeJonai Carrington’s foul on Indiana’s Sophie Cunningham. He suggested that if White had acknowledged her mistakes regarding the fans’ frustrations, perhaps it would have felt more like an apology. Instead, he perceived her response as more of an attack on the fans for causing a rift within the team.

Portnoy remarked, “It felt like she was chastising us for criticizing DJ’s tweet about ‘white privilege.’ That’s what creates division. Fever fans and players face scrutiny constantly. We want coaches who understand that.”

White’s statements before the Fever’s 106-92 victory over the Liberty aimed to address two significant controversies surrounding the team and league.

The trouble sparked during a recent game against the Sky, where Carrington committed a serious foul on Cunningham, a player already in the hot seat for her remarks on trans athletes.

Carrington faced disciplinary actions for the foul, which White claimed was not intentional. This defense, however, drew backlash, including from Indiana’s Lieutenant Governor, who suggested that the Fever ought to part ways with White.

Amid the criticism, Indiana fans expressed their discontent by booing her, a move that Clark publicly condemned.

In her defense, White conveyed her feelings about the online portrayals attempting to distort her character and intentions. She emphasized her commitment to her players’ well-being and success, pointing out that she couldn’t have seen the play unfold in real-time as she rushed to the press conference. She expressed her concern for Cunningham’s health, stating she was relieved to find out she was okay post-game.

“I take it personally when I’m not backing the players fully. I stand with them wholeheartedly. It’s unfortunate their excellent performance isn’t getting enough attention because of all this mess,” White added.

She also addressed how recent events about Cunningham’s disapproval of trans athletes have overshadowed the WNBA. Currently, there are no transgender players in the league. However, the conversation intensified when two former NBA players announced their intentions to enter the WNBA draft.

White, identifying as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, denounced those she views as spreading negativity and division.

“I coach with love, grace, humility, and integrity. I might not always get it right; I’m human too. But those who thrive on hate and division will not succeed. Our players are constantly in battle for their identities and rights,” she asserted. “Love will always triumph. Anyone else can take a hike.”

Amidst the surrounding controversies, the Fever have found themselves rising in the WNBA rankings, now sitting in fourth place and within striking distance of the teams above them.
