Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, announced on Monday that he has withdrawn an offer for “a moment to be taught” to one of the individuals associated with anti-Semitic signs displayed at one of the company’s bars.
In a twist revealed during his video statement, Portnoy addressed a video that had circulated online featuring a sign that read “f— Jews.” He had previously suggested sending those responsible to Auschwitz, a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, to learn about the Holocaust.
Portnoy mentioned having conversations with two individuals involved in the situation, emphasizing that both needed to be “accountable” for their actions. One of the identified individuals, Mo Kahn, stated in a long Instagram post that he was not part of the incident.
Kahn’s statement described himself as a “citizen journalist” and expressed his overwhelming concern for his safety since the video’s release. He noted, “I hate it in all ways. I have been raised to be respectful and friendly to all people. I hope some good can come from this.”
After seeing Kahn’s statement, Portnoy reached out, believing Kahn felt pressured to deny any involvement. Portnoy confronted him, saying, “You uploaded this to Instagram. I didn’t put your f—ing name there. Others uploaded it, and you got laughs about it.” Kahn insisted it wasn’t him, but Portnoy replied, “Well, I’m getting millions of DMs about you.”
Portnoy also mentioned his confusion regarding Kahn’s other questionable anti-Semitic posts, suggesting perhaps his parents could better explain them. He expressed frustration, saying, “It’s like I’m trying to be a teaching moment, and he’s hanging from a temple because of the sign he posted.”
Ultimately, Portnoy decided not to send Kahn to Auschwitz, stating, “Sorry, man. I tried to make something out of this.” He pointed out the contradiction in Kahn’s behavior, questioning how he could claim ignorance regarding the sign he publicly shared.
Philadelphia police are reportedly looking into the matter, gathering more information about the incident.
