Davos’ World Economic Forum turns into an Art Basel celebration

Davos' World Economic Forum turns into an Art Basel celebration

World Economic Forum in Davos Draws Mixed Reactions

This year’s World Economic Forum in Davos has stirred up some discontent among long-time attendees. Some have noted it feels more akin to a party scene, reminiscent of Art Basel in Miami, rather than a serious gathering focused on diplomacy and business.

The event wraps up on Friday. While high-profile speeches and discussions have certainly made headlines, drawing attention from famous figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk, many participants have remarked that these sessions turned chaotic and feel more like a social gathering—something like an extravagant New Year’s celebration or a winter polo match in St. Moritz.

One attendee, who’s been part of the event for over a decade, shared some frustrations: “Security is tight, there’s endless traffic, and, honestly, I’m always hungry.”

Attendees are keenly aware that many exclusive dinners and events still require invites. There’s a buzz around gatherings hosted by prominent figures like Jamie Dimon and Jane Fraser. However, the sheer volume of events has altered the event’s atmosphere significantly.

A large part of this shift can be attributed to the lavish expenditures of Big Tech companies.

Firms such as Meta, Anthropic, and Palantir are now hosting substantial invite-only dinners and cocktail events, overshadowing the more traditional corporate events. These side gatherings have morphed into main attractions in their own right.

Additionally, the heightened security measures brought in during the Trump administration have added to the overall experience.

Typically, only World Economic Forum members can attend sessions. Membership fees generally start around $75,000, while “strategic partners” can cough up over $700,000. Interestingly, prominent leaders and executives from across the globe often receive invitations without the requirement of paying membership fees.

One source mentioned, “I’m actually relieved that there’s less visibility here.” It’s a curious sentiment that captures the complex atmosphere of an event meant to unite influential figures.
