A Washington, D.C., driver fought off a would-be car burglar who jumped into his car and threatened him with a knife over the weekend, but car burglaries in the city so far this year remain at record-breaking numbers from last year. announced the authorities. .

According to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, a female suspect attempted to carjack a driver while the victim was sitting in a moving vehicle in the 100 block of Kennedy Street Northwest around 10 a.m. Saturday.

Police say an unidentified suspect got into the car, pointed a knife at the driver and demanded the victim get out of the car.

Police said the victim fought back in an attempt to stop the woman from stealing the car.

The victim sustained minor injuries, but the suspect fled the scene.

Surveillance cameras captured footage of a woman who appears to have attempted to carjack the victim.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact police, who are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest or conviction in the case.

So far this year, carjackings in the nation’s capital are on pace to break last year’s record.

As of Wednesday, 75 carjackings had been reported citywide since the beginning of the year, compared to 83 during the same period last year.

According to public police data, carjacking incidents in the city almost doubled in 2023, with 958 incidents reported in 2022 (a 97.9% jump) compared to 484 incidents reported in 2022. The majority of car burglary arrests in the city (64%) involved juveniles, with the most common ages for offenders being 15 and 16.
