Mexican President Calls for Clarity on DEA Announcement

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has raised questions regarding a recent announcement from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) about a joint initiative between the two countries. During a press conference in the morning, she expressed uncertainty about the DEA’s statement, emphasizing that no formal agreement had been established with the U.S. government.

Sheinbaum remarked, “I don’t know what they are basing that on,” responding to inquiries about the new initiative.

This announcement from the DEA, made on Monday afternoon, introduced a program titled “Portero,” or Gatekeeper, aimed at targeting groups controlling smuggling routes along the southern U.S. border.

The DEA indicated that the Portero program will involve Mexican investigators working within U.S. intelligence reporting units for several weeks. Their role will be to identify key targets and devise strategies to address the operations of these groups. Moreover, the program aims to enhance information sharing between law enforcement in both nations.

Officials stated, “Project Portero and this new training program illustrate our approach to tackling this issue. Collaborating with our Mexican counterparts signifies a bold first step in a new chapter of cross-border law enforcement.”

The framework connects Mexican investigators with U.S. law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and those in the intelligence community, allowing for cooperative identification of targets and improved intelligence sharing.

Sheinbaum’s remarks come as her administration faces scrutiny over its efforts against drug cartels, particularly after Mexico transferred numerous cartel leaders to the U.S. earlier this year in an effort to satisfy U.S. officials.

This situation has been exacerbated by U.S. President Donald Trump’s earlier announcement of tariffs aimed at pressuring Mexico regarding the ongoing drug crisis, pushing the country to adopt a more stringent stance against the cartels.
