Hikers on a popular trail are being advised to steer clear of squirrels after reports emerged of sick or deceased squirrels around Runyon Canyon Park in the Hollywood Hills.
Authorities have noted instances of “sick, lethargic, and dead squirrels” along the hiking route, prompting them to urge hikers to report any sightings to park rangers without delay.
The alert warns that “sick wild animals can transmit diseases to humans and pets,” emphasizing that these reports are essential for maintaining safety in the parks.
Rangers are cautioning that signs of sickness in squirrels might include lethargy or disorientation. People are encouraged to notify authorities if they encounter any dead squirrels on or near trails.
They’re advising against any interaction with the animals and recommending that dogs remain on leashes and away from wildlife to reduce the risk of exposure to potential diseases.
Additionally, individuals are discouraged from feeding squirrels or other wild animals, and are reminded to wash their hands thoroughly after visiting the park.
The situation with the sick squirrels has sparked quite a bit of discussion online. Some are speculating whether the animals are suffering from a wildlife disease or possibly something more sinister, like poisoning.
One commenter humorously noted how they sometimes feel like a disoriented squirrel themselves, especially after a tough hike, while another warned against feeding the squirrels, labeling it both illegal and harmful.
A third individual raised concerns that the squirrels might be receiving poison intended for rodents.
The alert also includes guidance for hikers on how to report any peculiar behavior from the squirrels and suggests taking note of the time and location of such sightings if possible.
Inquiries were made to the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks regarding the situation to gain further insight.
