President Joe Biden announced Monday that he is considering additional sanctions against Russia after opposition leader Alexei Navalny died in prison last week.
Biden: “We have already imposed sanctions, but we are also considering additional sanctions.” Said He spoke to reporters upon arriving at the White House after spending the weekend in Delaware.

In 2021, Biden warned: [Navalny’s death while in prison] “It would be catastrophic for Russia,” he added, adding that it would be difficult to trust the Kremlin’s explanation of how he would die.
“What do you think will happen if he says his purpose is not to harm Mr. Navalny, and all he says is to rationalize the treatment of Mr. Navalny, and then he dies in prison?” the president said at the time. “It’s a question of trust. What matters is their ability to have a positive impact on other countries.”
“Unless the American people speak up in defense of our democratic values and, in our view, the universal and fundamental freedoms of all men and women, no American president will be able to protect the United States.” We cannot maintain trust with the people.”
Following Navalny’s death on Friday, Biden blamed It highlighted the Kremlin’s abuses over his death and highlighted the numerous sanctions imposed on Russia for its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
“What happened to Mr. Navalny is further evidence of Mr. Putin’s brutality. No one should be fooled in Russia, at home or anywhere in the world,” Biden said.
Navalny was first imprisoned in early 2021 and was reportedly subject to abuse. At some point in 2023, he went missing for at least three weeks.
Former President Donald Trump also spoke out days after Navalny’s death, drawing criticism for the silence of his main Republican rival, former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley.
“The sudden death of Alexei Navalny has made me increasingly aware of what is happening in this country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This is slow and steady progress, with crooked radical left politicians, prosecutors, and judges leading us down a path to destruction.”
