Chemical Implosion in Longview Results in Injuries and Fatalities
On Tuesday afternoon, the Longview Fire Department reported that several individuals were injured, with some fatalities, following a chemical explosion at a local plant.
The incident occurred at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility shortly before 7:20 a.m. local time, when an 80,000-gallon storage tank, containing a substance known as “white liquor,” imploded.
Emergency responders found multiple victims suffering from serious chemical burns and injuries related to inhalation. While officials confirmed deaths at the site, the exact number has not been disclosed.
“My team and I are monitoring the developments in Longview after the explosion. Responders from our state Department of Ecology have been sent to the scene. It’s heartbreaking to learn about the fatalities. My thoughts are with the workers, their families, and the first responders,” stated Washington Governor Bob Ferguson.
White liquor is a highly caustic solution primarily made of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, which is used in paper manufacturing to convert wood chips into pulp.
Authorities report that ten individuals, including nine plant employees and one firefighter, sustained varying degrees of injuries, from minor to critical. They were transported to medical facilities in Longview and Vancouver.
A representative from PeaceHealth later confirmed that one of the nine patients from the facility had died from their injuries, two were moved for specialized treatment, and six were in fair condition. The firefighter involved is also reported to have been released.
“There are still individuals who are unaccounted for as search and recovery efforts continue,” said Mike Gorsuch, battalion chief of the Longview Fire Department.
While officials reassured the public that there is no immediate chemical threat to the area, residents have been advised to keep clear of Industrial Way and its surroundings.
U.S. Senator Patty Murray also expressed her sympathies and commended the efforts of first responders in her statement.
“Today’s explosion is a tragedy. My heart goes out to everyone who lost a loved one and to the injured workers. I want to recognize the bravery of the first responders and health care workers facing this disaster. I will closely follow the recovery efforts in Longview and support the community in any way I can,” said Murray.
