Chicago Pastor Calls for Action Amid Crime Crisis

A Chicago pastor has strongly criticized claims that the city’s crime situation is improving, urging President Donald Trump to step in before violence escalates further. Pastor Corey Brooks, who leads the violence prevention organization Project Hood, expressed his concerns on Wednesday, highlighting the alarming statistics: there have been 254 fatalities in just 233 days, with a significant percentage of those victims being young Black boys.

Recent data from the city’s crime dashboard reveals a total of 266 murders this year, averaging more than one death per day. “To suggest that things are getting better and that people feel safe throughout our community is simply untrue,” Brooks stated during an appearance on Fox & Friends.

Brooks is particularly vocal about his call for the National Guard to be deployed to Chicago, pointing out the recent crime reduction observed in Washington, D.C., which coincided with the National Guard’s presence there.

He accuses Illinois leaders of preventing similar actions in Chicago, possibly for political reasons. “The government should prioritize the safety of its citizens. That’s what should come first for both the governor and the mayor, but it seems that isn’t the case,” he remarked.

Brooks feels that the political dynamic neglects the urgency of the issue. “It seems the lives of Black people only matter when it comes to voting,” he added.

In response to Brooks’ comments, both Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker have rejected Trump’s offer to intervene. At a recent press conference, Johnson emphasized: “We aim to represent what we stand for.” Pritzker further requested, “President, please don’t come to Chicago.”

However, Trump has conveyed his readiness to assist. “I want to go to Chicago. This is a significant issue, but there are governors who refuse to acknowledge it,” he said.

Pastor Brooks believes that the violence resonates deeply within his community. “There’s no doubt that crime is still a grave issue here. We’re witnessing mothers bury their young sons, and that’s incredibly troubling. It’s misleading to imply that things are improving,” he commented.

While acknowledging that deploying the National Guard would be a temporary measure, Brooks thinks it can help break the cycle of violence, stating, “We’ve seen the National Guard calm things down in the past, but our organization is focused on finding long-term solutions.” He added that remaining silent is no longer an option, asserting, “We need to make it clear that this is a Chicago issue, and it should be acknowledged by our leaders.”
