Debra Messing Criticized for Leaving the City Her Politics Contributed to Ruin

Debra Messing’s Retreat to Iceland Amid Political Turmoil

Debra Messing, known for her role in Will & Grace, is facing a challenging time after leaving New York City for a resort in Iceland. With a long history of supporting Democratic politicians, she recently expressed on her X account…

“Sometimes you just have to run away… Like you, I’ve been open about my fight against the hate and violence we see around the world,” she shared. The actress conveyed her feelings of helplessness and heartbreak, particularly regarding the chaos engulfing the city she adores.

That city is New York City.

“I realized I needed to reset. The majesty of nature has always been the answer for me. So I went to Iceland. Alone. And it was transformational,” she explained. She hoped witnessing the Northern Lights would reignite her sense of awe about the universe, saying it brought her back to life.

Messing even shared a selfie from a steaming pool during her getaway.

Yet, her retreat hasn’t exactly been met with sympathy; many critics have pointed out her privilege as a prominent left-wing activist with the means to escape her problems.

Messing has publicly criticized current New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani, labeling him a “real communist jihadist” and expressing dismay over his handling of a recent ice storm. However, her support for various leftist causes has come under scrutiny, especially since she had previously advocated for significant cuts to the police budget during a campaign.

Interestingly, she seems to have had a revelation following the October 7 massacre of approximately 1,200 Israelis, including many civilians. In a recent interview, she expected widespread condemnation of the violence but was shocked to see celebrations instead. This realization left her feeling nauseous and questioning the hate directed toward Jewish people.

Though it may seem insensitive for her to escape to a luxury spa amid such turmoil, her journey suggests an internal conflict. Messing has spent years aligning with groups that now appear to support anti-Jewish sentiment, leaving her to grapple with the reality of her political affiliations.

At 57, there’s an expectation she would have recognized the nature of these movements sooner—perhaps when extreme views about children’s rights took center stage. While it’s understandable to feel compassion for her predicament, one can’t overlook the contradictions in her past actions.

Moving forward, Messing faces a critical choice. If she wishes to maintain her standing in Hollywood, she may have to reconsider her stance towards Mamdani and clarify her pro-Israel views. The left may tolerate her on many issues, but deviating from their expected narrative could spell the end of her career.
