Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reveals the first pay raise for Army paratroopers in 25 years

Defense Secretary Promises to Restore Military Spirit and Increase Pay

During a recent speech in North Carolina with members of the 82nd Airborne Division, the Secretary of Defense made a commitment to revive the “warrior spirit” within the U.S. military. Additionally, he announced a pay raise for the Air Tro unit.

At Fort Bragg, where American Week was being celebrated, Hegseth communicated President Donald Trump’s vision. “We’re going back to basics,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of restoring the warrior ethos throughout the ranks. “This is the standard we uphold every day.”

He took the opportunity to unveil an increase in the risky duty incentive known as Jump Pay, which will rise from $150 to $200 per month for the Air Tro squad. For Jump Masters, an extra $150 will be added to their current pay for the first time.

Hegseth reflected on the army’s centrality to all significant decisions at the Pentagon. He assured the audience that their well-being is always a priority in budgeting, planning, and deployments.

He laid out a core strategy that, as promoted by Trump, emphasizes readiness, dismisses identity politics, and reinforces America’s deterrent capabilities. “Our focus will be on preparation, accountability, and combat standards. Individual backgrounds shouldn’t matter; all that counts is merit,” he said.

Returning to foundational principles is crucial, he argued, for effectively countering global threats. “President Trump is dedicated to historic investments in our formation. When the 82nd Airborne is deployed, you will be better equipped than any combat squadron worldwide,” he claimed.

In his remarks, Hegseth acknowledged the current global challenges, referencing the war in Ukraine and recent terrorist acts. “The world has long been questioning where American strength lies,” he noted, emphasizing the need for the U.S. to lead through its power.

He concluded by celebrating the rich history and promising future of the 82nd Airborne. “Just as your predecessors have done, you’ll keep demonstrating your capabilities because you’re ready for the significant challenges ahead.”

The Army Office of Public Service did not respond immediately when asked for comments regarding the speech.
