Delta Flight Diverts to London Due to Toilet Issue

A Delta flight scheduled from Paris to Seattle had to unexpectedly land in London after a flight attendant reported a problem with one of the airplane’s toilets, according to the airline.

Delta Flight 81 took off from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport on August 13 but, due to a mechanical issue, the crew decided to reroute to London Heathrow Airport.

At that point, the Airbus A330-900 was transporting 209 passengers along with 13 crew members, as Delta Air Lines shared. Upon nearing Heathrow, the crew informed air traffic control of an emergency, noting that the plane was overweight while preparing for landing.

Despite the emergency declaration, the landing at Heathrow was executed safely.

After the plane arrived, Delta’s maintenance teams addressed the mechanical issues related to the restroom.

A spokesperson for Delta expressed regret for the inconvenience, stating, “We apologize for the inconvenience and delay to our customers…This is not the experience we are trying to provide. We are focused on getting our customers to their destination as quickly and safely as possible.”

After the necessary repairs, the plane took off from Heathrow, but the detour meant that passengers needed to take a longer route to reach Seattle. The flight then redirected to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York instead of heading directly to Seattle, due to crew scheduling regulations.

Upon arrival at JFK, passengers went through U.S. customs before continuing on to Seattle. So ultimately, this unusual trip saw the 209 passengers traveling from Paris to London, then across the Atlantic to New York, and finally reaching Seattle.

Delta has not disclosed specific details about the toilet’s mechanical issues or the maintenance required to fix them.
