Delta Flight Returns to Airport After Engine Failure

A Delta Air Lines flight had to make an emergency return to a Georgia airport at an accelerated speed after experiencing engine failure shortly after takeoff. The incident left behind a burning patch of grass along the flight path.

Flight 1067, a Boeing 737-900, was heading from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport to Atlanta, a journey expected to last about an hour. Just minutes into the flight, the pilot declared an emergency situation.

Concern arose when the captain identified an issue with the left engine, and flames were visible from the control tower.

During the incident, an air traffic controller commented, “Are you OK? You could see pretty big flames on takeoff,” referencing the visible flames captured in a radio transmission.

The pilot later confirmed, “On Delta Flight 1067, the left engine failed right here.”

Reports indicated that grass beside the runway caught fire due to the engine trouble, creating quite a chaotic scene. Air traffic controllers quickly redirected another plane on the runway to ensure emergency vehicles could access the area more easily.

Footage taken by witnesses showed a heavy blaze lighting up the runway and an orange haze stretching across the sky.

One of the pilots raised a crucial question, wondering if the fire was related to their aircraft’s malfunction or if it was an independent incident. The controller grimly confirmed that the engine failure had ignited a fire on the grass adjacent to the airport.

Fortunately, all individuals onboard—179 passengers, four flight attendants, and two pilots—were safely accounted for when the plane landed back at the original airport less than 30 minutes after takeoff. There were no reported injuries.

Delta Airlines later stated, “Flight 1067 from Savannah to Atlanta returned shortly after takeoff due to a mechanical problem with the left engine. The Boeing 737-900 landed safely and was met by rescue crews.” Passengers deplaned at the gate as planned.

The airline reassured everyone, saying, “The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority. We apologize for any delays.” One passenger, Jeanne Miraglia, recounted hearing a loud noise during the ascent and described how the pilot informed them of the engine failure but reassured them that they were safe.

After the incident, passengers were placed on a different flight, which eventually arrived at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport just past 3 a.m.
