Dem governor to send cash payments to New Yorkers to fight inflation — and the backlash is fierce

Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced plans to send cash checks to residents, but many people mocked her for misunderstanding basic economics.

Hochul announced Monday that the state will send $300 and $500 checks to low-income residents to help combat high inflation.

“There's no need to rely on gimmicks that reek of hopelessness and incompetence.”

“Prices are high and New Yorkers are feeling the strain on their wallets.” said Hochul on social media. “We want to give $500 inflation refund checks to households with incomes under $300,000. No loopholes, no BS. We just want to give them money they can use to pay their bills.”

Democratic critics immediately pounced on the announcement, criticizing her for the state's high taxes.

“News breaking to Kathy Hochul: Taking thousands of dollars out of New Yorkers' left pockets and putting $500 in their right pockets is not a tax cut, it's an insult. And that's exactly what millions of New Yorkers are heading for the exits.” That's why I'm here. answered Republican Congressman Mike Lawler from New York.

“If we cut taxes and spending like real leaders do, we don't have to resort to gimmicks that reek of desperation and incompetence.” answered former state representative Steve McLaughlin (Republican);

Some ridiculed her for trying to fight inflation with “solutions” that would likely lead to higher inflation.

“Before you propose a bill, why not take a basic Econ 101 class? What's next? Your plan to fight obesity is free to everyone over 250 lbs. Are you offering donuts?” read One reply.

“Handing out more money to people as 'inflation refunds' is literally the stupidest and least intelligent solution to inflation…perhaps ever.” answered Entrepreneur Darin Feinstein.

“This sounds like satire to me. Giving away government money in an inflationary environment is exactly how more inflation happens. You add fuel to the fire.” read Another reply.

Hochul also faces a tough battle for re-election. recent polls showed While 57% of New Yorkers want the governor to be replaced, only 33% say they support his re-election.
