Rep. Jared Golden, a Democrat from Maine, criticized politicians for panicking over the possibility of a Trump victory, arguing that the American system will keep Trump in check and in check, just like any other president.

Democrats have been reeling since President Biden’s performance in last week’s presidential debate was widely criticized. The president’s appearance and gaffes have sparked renewed national outrage over his ability to do his job and led many of his most ardent supporters to call for him to resign. In contrast, Golden called on Democrats to stop worrying about former President Trump as a threat to the American political system and instead accept that he will win the presidential election in November.

“After the first presidential debate, many Democrats are panicking about whether President Joe Biden should withdraw as the party’s nominee. Biden’s poor performance in the debate didn’t surprise me and didn’t upset me as much as it did others, because the outcome of this election has been clear to me for months. I’m not going to vote for him, but Donald Trump is going to win, and I’m OK with that,” Golden says. I have written From the Bangor Daily News.

He added, “Democratic anxiety after the debate is based on the idea that a Trump victory is not just a political defeat but a particular threat to our democracy. I reject this premise. Unlike Biden and many other candidates, I refuse to join a campaign to scare voters with the idea that Trump will end our democratic institutions.”

Fewer than a third of voters support Biden over Trump on immigration: poll

After talking about past trials and tribulations that America has weathered since that first Independence Day, President Trump changed the subject, saying, “This election is about the economy, it’s not about democracy. And when it comes to the economy, Congress matters a lot more than who occupies the White House.”

“Some of Congress’ greatest accomplishments in recent years have been achieved in spite of the president, not because of him,” he argued. “A handful of responsible Democrats, including myself and Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, rejected Biden’s bloated ‘Build Back Better’ bill and instead passed legislation that will soar American energy production, save Medicare billions of dollars, and reduce the deficit.”

He also cited another example of Congress, this time under President Trump, holding back major political change.

“Several years ago, Congress stood up to a Republican establishment that was trying to hijack Trump Administration policies and achieve its long-held goal of repealing Obamacare,” he wrote. “In defeating them, we protected health insurance for tens of millions of Americans and protections for people with pre-existing conditions.”

New national poll shows Trump outperforms Biden in debate

He said, “The representative from Maine [Trump] “I will hold the president accountable when he benefits Mainers and when he doesn’t,” he said, adding that even Trump reforms he personally supports will face stiff political opposition.

“Congress must stand up to economic elites and so-called experts from both parties who are already working overtime to block Trump’s trade proposals that would reverse the harms of globalization and protect American companies from unfair foreign competition,” he wrote. “We must protect from extremists the legislation I helped pass that would cap insulin costs for seniors at $35 and force big pharmaceutical companies to negotiate lower prescription drug costs.”

He reiterated his previous assertion that Trump’s presidency is not the threat to democracy that some claim.

“I urge voters, public officials, the media and all Americans to ignore the scare tactics and political fantasies of the sycophant crowd,” he wrote. “We don’t need party insiders in smoke-filled backrooms to save us. We can protect our democracy without them.”
