Trump Declines to Sign Housing Bill
President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he won’t sign a housing bill recently passed by Congress. His decision comes as a reaction to the Senate’s inability to approve the Save America Act. This legislation aimed to restrict mail-in voting, requiring voters to show photo ID and proof of citizenship, with certain exceptions.
In his words, Trump stated, “I will not sign the housing bill that has been fully approved by Congress and sent to the White House to protest the fact that the United States Senate is incapable of passing the American Rescue Act.” He expressed his thoughts on social media.
Trump pointed out that support for the SAVE America Act stood at “97% among Republicans” and garnered significant backing from Democrats outside of politics.
“This law simply states that to vote, you need to present a photo voter ID and proof of citizenship. Furthermore, it eliminates the distortions and corruption associated with mail-in voting,” he elaborated, acknowledging specific exceptions for the military, disabilities, illness, and travel.
He also remarked, “The failure to pass the American Rescue Act is outrageous and poses a serious danger to politicians who oppose it!”
Trump underscored his stance, saying, “We will not let the Democrats, or the RINOs collaborating with them, undermine America or support this bill and any other legislation that true Republicans envision.” He referred to incoming budget issues and the “disastrous 1929-style debt ceiling bill.”
He added, “If Democrats had the opportunity, they would end the filibuster immediately. I won’t be able to call them Democrats anymore! The label of ‘DUMB’ goes back to the Republicans who allowed this catastrophe to unfold in our party and country!”
Previously, Trump expressed his hesitance to move forward with a signing ceremony for the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act until the SAVE AMERICA ACT was passed, labeling it a “national emergency.” The housing bill, led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, had strong bipartisan support, passing 89-10 in the Senate and 358-32 in the House. It seeks to prohibit institutional investors from acquiring single-family homes. Despite supporting the housing legislation, Trump withheld his endorsement for the SAVE America Act, which includes provisions banning transgender surgeries and restricting participation in women’s athletics.
Earlier, when discussing election law, Trump insisted, “Every election matters. We’re doing very well,” claiming that Democrats were promoting individuals he described as “communists.”
During his Fourth of July address, he rallied support for the SAVE America Act, emphasizing that “every voter must present their voter ID” and provide “proof of citizenship.” Claiming the measure would eradicate election fraud, he added, “It’s very simple,” drawing cheers from the crowd. Moreover, he noted the bill’s significance increased following the Supreme Court’s decision that permitted states to count mail-in ballots even after Election Day without violating federal laws.
