Tragic Incident Involving Former Virginia Lt. Governor

On Thursday, former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax and his wife, Dr. Selina Fairfax, were discovered deceased in their Annandale home. Authorities have classified the incident as a murder-suicide.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis indicated that the events unfolded shortly after midnight. According to investigators, Justin reportedly shot his wife, a local dentist, in their basement before moving to the master bedroom where he took his own life.

During the tragedy, their two teenage children were present in the home but fortunately unharmed. It was their son who called 911 to report the situation. Such circumstances are heart-wrenching, especially considering the children were home at the time.

This tragic event occurred amidst growing tensions within the family. Reports suggest that the couple had been living apart since June 2024 as they navigated divorce proceedings, and Justin had received new legal documents regarding the case just before the shooting occurred.

Chief Davis described the situation as “an ongoing domestic dispute over what appears to be a complicated and messy divorce.” He added that it is a particularly poignant incident given the couple’s public stature. “It’s tragic for kids to lose their parents, but even more tragic to be there when it happens,” he remarked at a press conference outside their home.

A divorce petition had been filed by Selina in July 2025, just a year after their first separation. Virginia law requires couples to live separately for at least a year before filing for divorce, which adds another layer of complexity to the situation.

Chief Davis noted that the divorce proceedings were ongoing and that Justin had been served with court documents shortly before the tragedy. “Our biggest concern right now is their health. They’re interacting with us,” he stated in a recent update.

This incident wasn’t the first time police had been alerted to issues at the Fairfax household. Earlier in January, Justin accused Selina of assaulting him, but after reviewing camera footage from inside their home, authorities concluded that her claims were false.

Friends of the couple, including conservative columnist Sophia Nelson, expressed their shock on social media regarding the unfolding events. It’s always difficult to reconcile such tragedies, particularly involving public figures.

Justin, once a rising star in the Democratic Party, had a career that included working on presidential campaigns and serving as a federal prosecutor. He had run for Virginia attorney general in 2013 but was unsuccessful in the Democratic primary. Although he later became lieutenant governor, his political aspirations faced severe setbacks following sexual assault allegations that emerged in 2019.

Multiple women have accused Justin of assault, with serious allegations surfacing from incidents in 2000 and 2004. One of the accusers, Vanessa Tyson, alleged that he raped her at a hotel during the Democratic National Convention. Justin has consistently denied these accusations, maintaining that their interactions were consensual. He has described the claims as part of a conspiracy aimed at ruining his career.
