Democratic Challenger in Maine Targets R-Senator Collins

A new Democratic contender is entering the race against Republican Senator Collins of Maine, adopting what state GOP leader Jason Savage describes as a socialist approach similar to that of Zohran Mamdani.

Democrat Graham Platter, who promotes his background as a veteran in the Army and Marine Corps and as an oyster farmer, launched his campaign recently. However, Savage expressed skepticism about Platter’s rural appeal being backed by sound policies, especially since Platter’s launch video was produced by Morris Katz, a top advisor for Mamdani.

In the launch video, Platter criticizes “oligarchy” and endorses Universal Healthcare. His campaign website discusses the “billionaire economy” in the U.S. and asserts that he aims to “dismantle it” if elected.

“Graham Platter is the Maine version of Mamdani,” Savage highlighted in an interview. “He’s brought in Mamdani’s team for support and collaborates frequently with socialist groups. It’s clear he aligns himself with Bernie Sanders.”

Senate Democrats Seek Strong Candidates for Mid-Terms

Savage noted the larger issue at hand, suggesting Democrats seem to be attempting to push Mamdani-style ideologies into Maine, thinking they can gain a foothold there without significant backlash.

He pointed out, “It’s worth looking into Graham Platner’s donor history and see what connections he has.” Although the Platner campaign hasn’t made any statements to Fox News Digital yet, Savage emphasized that common-sense Democrats might feel sidelined under current leadership, particularly as seen with Senator Chuck Schumer.

He argues that Democrats could struggle without the support of their “extreme wings,” which, paradoxically, may create challenges they can’t handle effectively. “It’s a double-edged sword,” he remarked, hinting at possible pitfalls in their strategy.

Growing List of Democratic Challengers

Savage also commented on the implications of these positions for Platter’s future. He believes such policies could be detrimental for the Democratic Party, particularly those concerning participation in sports. “It’s not popular, and they seem unable to counter it,” he added.

On the other hand, the roster of potential challengers to Collins is expanding. Reports suggest that the state’s 77-year-old Democratic Governor, Janet Mills, may also enter the race.

The Republicans currently hold the Senate majority with a 53-47 seat margin. For Democrats to claim control in the 2026 midterms, they would need to flip four seats.

A Collins spokesperson labeled Platter as “just another progressive in the mix.” It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
