Democrat Rep. Jayapal Falsely Claims No Unaccompanied Migrant Children Went Missing in the U.S.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) falsely claimed this week that thousands of unaccompanied migrant children are not missing in the United States.

A recent report from the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General (OIG) in August of this year showed Since 2019, as many as 32,000 immigrant children have been detained in the United States after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents released them into the custody of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). are missing. .

“[ICE] “We were unable to monitor the location and status of all unaccompanied migrant children (UCs) or initiate removal proceedings when necessary,” the OIG report states. “Our ongoing audits evaluate ICE’s ability to monitor the location and condition of UCs released or transferred from custody. [DHS] and [HHS]found that ICE transferred more than 448,000 UCs to HHS from FY 2019 to FY 2023. ”

“However, ICE was unable to account for the location of all UCs released by HHS who did not appear in immigration court as scheduled. of UCs reported failing to appear at immigration court hearings,” it added.

The report also showed that many of these children may be subject to exploitation, child labor, human trafficking, and other abuses. Despite the evidence, Jayapal declared on the House floor that HHS simply lost contact with the children after they were placed with adult sponsors.

“Today's hearing will be the majority's final attempt to use the same false argument that the Biden administration intentionally lost tens of thousands of children, but all We know that is factually incorrect,” Jayapal said. “And I'm sure [HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra] We're going to address this issue as well, but let's be clear: These kids are not lost. ”

“Once an unaccompanied child is reunited with the sponsor, usually a parent or next of kin, HHS's legal authority ceases. HHS ensures that all is well between the sponsor and the child. HHS does not have the ability to force entry into the home if no one responds to these three calls. You won't be able to contact the child. That doesn't mean the child is gone,” she added.
