New York City Mayoral Candidate’s Spending Raises Eyebrows

Zohran Mamdani, the prominent candidate for mayor in New York City, is spending a significant amount on private security for both his campaign and personal safety, despite having previously advocated for police funding cuts. This revelation comes from an examination of spending reports.

Mamdani, a Democratic contender who identifies as part of the Democratic Socialists of America, reportedly expended $33,495 on private security services. The New York City Campaign Finance Committee outlined that his campaign made three payments to Advanced Security and Investigations, which occurred in June and July.

This security firm, based in New York, provides a variety of services, including both armed and unarmed protection. Interestingly, it employs former New York Police Department officials—individuals Mamdani once called to defund.

Payments listed for services rendered ranged from approximately $8,000 to about $13,000, labeled simply as “security.”

Recently, Mamdani made headlines for hosting a lavish three-day wedding celebration in Uganda that featured military security and even mobile phone jamming technology.

Despite his past rhetoric against the NYPD—especially after a tragic shooting in Midtown Manhattan last month that left several dead, including an NYPD officer—Mamdani now finds himself in a contradictory position. He had previously asserted on social media that the NYPD is racist and a threat to public safety, echoing sentiments on the need to defund the police.

However, during his campaign, he has changed his tone, stating that those past comments do not reflect his current stance as a candidate. After the recent shooting, he claimed he’s not running to refund the police and emphasized his intention to dissolve the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group, which is responsible for responding to emergencies.

As mayor, he has promised to replace certain police functions with social workers and other community services instead of relying on traditional police responses.

The Mamdani campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment on this situation.
