Democratic Congressional Candidate Remains Quiet on Simplifying Name Removal for Sex Offenders

Democrats Were Against Iowa 'Back the Blue' Law Before 3rd Congressional Run

Democratic House Candidate Faces Backlash Over Vote

Christina Bohanan, a candidate for the 1st Congressional District in Iowa, is under scrutiny for her decision regarding sex offender registry laws. Despite repeated inquiries, she has chosen not to elaborate on her controversial vote.

In Iowa, sex offenders must adhere to strict regulations, including restrictions around schools and daycare facilities. However, Bohanan’s vote in favor of easing the process for offenders to seek removal from the registry has raised eyebrows. This pattern of evading questions about her vote is not new for her.

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa), also campaigning in the same district, criticized Bohanan, stating, “Christina Bohanan voted against keeping sex offenders on the registry for 25 years, diverging from the stance of 26 other Democrats who supported it.” She added, “She won’t clarify her rationale. That’s not something I can back.”

Emily Tuttle, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), also weighed in, claiming Bohanan missed the chance to justify her position to concerned Iowa parents. “Protecting our children should take precedence over advocating for impractical policies,” she remarked.

This situation isn’t Bohanan’s only controversial moment. During her time in the Iowa House of Representatives, from January 2021 to January 2023, she promoted a bill mandating implicit bias training for healthcare workers amid the pandemic.

Interestingly, as her state faced severe staffing shortages in hospitals, highlighted by various news outlets, she focused on policies related to implicit bias.

Bohanan was also previously involved in discussions about social justice, chairing a committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Iowa, and opposing Iowa’s “Back the Blue” law while showing support for Black Lives Matter protesters and encouraging donations to organizations like the Minnesota Freedom Fund.

The race in this battleground district holds significance, especially since Bohanan lost to Miller-Meeks by a narrow margin of just 799 votes in the 2024 election.
