MI Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s Focus on Gender-Affirming Care
Abdul El-Sayed, a far-left Muslim candidate running for the Michigan Senate, has made “gender-affirming care,” which he describes in left-wing terms, a core part of his campaign. This includes procedures such as genital surgeries, puberty blockers, and hormone therapies.
El-Sayed has garnered support from notable figures like socialist Senator Bernie Sanders and, more recently, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He emphasizes the need for universal acceptance of the experiences of individuals dealing with gender dysphoria as a significant priority.
On his official website, he presents this focus as part of a larger vision for universal healthcare, claiming to be “the only Michigan Senate candidate committed to guaranteeing health care for all Americans.”
“Medicare should be universally accepted, available to everyone, everywhere. While Medicare for All shouldn’t restrict supplementary private insurance from unions or employers, it should ideally render those options unnecessary,” he remarked.
El-Sayed further advocates for “medical freedom for women and LGBTQ+ individuals” and describes his agenda as supporting the choices of those experiencing what he terms as “delusions,” while also allowing women to elect to terminate their pregnancies.
He stated, “Everyone has the right to make personal decisions regarding their healthcare. Decisions about health should rest with patients (and their guardians in the case of minors) alongside their healthcare providers, not with any outside parties. This includes reproductive and gender-affirming care.”
This leads to the perception that, in Mr. El-Sayed’s viewpoint on universal healthcare, taxpayers would be asked to support not only abortion but also gender-related surgeries.
His website adds, “I will advocate for the codification of rights once secured by Roe v. Wade into federal law. I stand against any measures aiming to criminalize specific medications or employing legislation or funding reductions to hinder health providers from delivering comprehensive care to diverse communities.”
El-Sayed is not alone in promoting these views. Melat Quiroz, a socialist congressional candidate who won against Democratic Congresswoman Diana DeGette in Colorado, believes in establishing a federal Trans Bill of Rights. She argues for guaranteed “accurate and self-affirming identification” and “access to gender-affirming care for all ages.”
As the primary on August 4 approaches, recent polls indicate that El-Sayed’s primary opponent is leading in public opinion.
