Scott Wiener Challenges Nancy Pelosi in 2026 Primary
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is set to face a primary challenge in 2026 from state Representative Scott Wiener, a notable figure in the LGBTQ community who advocates for drag queens. Wiener, known for his stylish leather attire, has already raised over $1 million for his campaign.
Wiener has been serving the San Francisco area in the California Senate since 2016. He had initially indicated he would wait for Pelosi, now 85, to retire before running for her longstanding House seat. Yet reports surfaced that he will officially announce his candidacy next week.
His congressional campaign committee, established in 2023, disclosed that it had raised significant funds as of late last month. In comparison, Pelosi has raised about $2 million for her campaign efforts.
Pelosi, who underwent hip surgery after a recent fall in Europe, was seen navigating the Capitol with assistance earlier this week. Despite concerns about her health, she has not disclosed any retirement intentions.
Her spokesperson emphasized that Pelosi is dedicated to her objectives, particularly aimed at winning California’s special election set for November 4th.
As for Wiener, 55, his state Senate biography describes him as a vigorous advocate for LGBTQ civil rights. He has been involved in controversial legislation, including measures for gender-affirming care for minors and provisions related to non-binary IDs. There’s also been discussion about reforming laws concerning offenders, which some believe discriminate against LGBTQ youth.
Wiener is openly gay and often participates in the Folsom Street Fair, a prominent event in San Francisco’s kink culture. He’s even self-identifying as a “Drag Queen Defender,” showcasing his commitment to LGBTQ issues and performances.
In light of legislative attempts in Texas to ban drag shows in the presence of minors, Wiener proposed introducing “Drag Queen 101” classes in schools, suggesting participation in such events fulfills educational requirements.
Known for his outspoken nature, Wiener has been a critic of former President Trump, even labeling his supporters as a “private army.” Additionally, he has voiced his concerns about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), likening its approach to that of a “modern-day Gestapo,” urging for significant reform.
Wiener’s office did not respond to inquiries regarding the upcoming primary challenge and his agenda.
