Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda Start a Fresh Chapter of Optimism

Trump Celebrates Peace Agreement between Congo and Rwanda

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced a promising new chapter for the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, coinciding with a significant peace deal that he and his team facilitated.

Trump was joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the Oval Office, just after Rubio signed the agreement aimed at ending a long-standing conflict in the area. Vice President JD Vance stood by as the news unfolded.

“We are here today to celebrate a glorious victory,” Trump declared, emphasizing the importance of the peace deal that has been a long time coming. “It is for the cause of peace, and today marks the signing of a historic peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda.”

The President highlighted the toll that the conflict in Africa’s Great Lakes region has taken, stating that it “drove countless people out and claimed the lives of thousands.” However, he also expressed optimism, saying, “Today, violence and destruction are over, and the whole region is beginning a new chapter of hope and opportunity, harmony, prosperity and peace.”

Trump extended his gratitude to both nations, praising Rubio for his leadership in facilitating the agreement, as well as senior Africa adviser Massad Boulos, who is married to Trump’s daughter, Tiffany.

He congratulated Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi on the deal, even inviting them to the White House during the concluding stages of the agreement.

Teles Caixwamba, the Foreign Minister of Congo, who represented her country in signing the agreement, expressed her thanks to Trump and acknowledged the “amazing milestone.”

She urged Trump to remain dedicated to local peace efforts and to encourage regional leaders to take responsibility. Meanwhile, Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Ndunguh praised Trump’s leadership, expressing confidence in the potential for lasting peace as the U.S. stands alongside both nations.

He also stressed the critical role of the United States in ensuring the agreement is fulfilled, noting a history of unimplemented agreements in the past.

This major agreement follows recent U.S. actions at three Iranian nuclear sites and a historic ceasefire brokered by Trump between Iran and Israel, in addition to a truce between India and Pakistan.
