Future of Kamala Harris’ Governor Bid Uncertain Among California Democratic Fundraisers

Interest in former Vice President Kamala Harris’ potential run for governor isn’t generating much excitement among California Democratic donors, according to a report from Politico. The publication talked to several Democratic fundraisers who expressed a tepid response to Harris’ consideration of a gubernatorial campaign following her loss in the 2024 presidential elections.

“She may lead, but to be honest, no one is really excited about it,” said one Southern California fundraiser.

Harris, who lost to President Donald Trump in November, is contemplating a bid for the governorship, aiming to succeed Gavin Newsom, who is term-limited. A source close to her mentioned that she plans to decide by late summer whether to launch her campaign.

She faces a choice: run for governor next year in her home state or aim for the presidency again in 2028. An early poll shows she currently has a stronger lead compared to other potential candidates, largely due to name recognition.

However, several major donors have voiced concerns that Harris’ return to the race could reopen old wounds from her previous campaign, which ended with significant debt. There’s a desire among some for a more solid plan before they can rally around her for a gubernatorial run.

Mother Martin, a longtime Harris supporter and fundraiser in San Francisco, commented that initial enthusiasm for Harris’ potential bid has waned. “I think it’s a bit weakened,” he remarked. Another donor, who had contributed significantly to her presidential campaign, shared feelings of reluctance, citing trauma from her prior campaign experience.

“Kamala reminds us of the whole situation with Biden, and while she did her best, there’s a recognition of certain difficulties she faced,” the donor explained.

Scott Drexel, another donor advisor, echoed these sentiments, commenting on the lack of overwhelming support for Harris’ run. “She will need to really work for that nomination. Each passing day diminishes any sense of inevitability about her candidacy,” he said.

Democrat donor Joe Cotchett highlighted that Harris must clarify her intentions soon, or she may face challenges in her bid. Nonetheless, Harris’ team has yet to respond to requests for comments on these concerns.
