According to a report from Axios, some Democratic strategists are suggesting that, in light of recent electoral setbacks, the party’s best chance for the 2028 presidential nomination may be to choose a “heterosexual, white, Christian man.” This idea seems to stem from concerns about the appeal of diverse candidates among certain voter demographics.
Axios noted that there’s a rising discussion among Democratic leaders about whether appointing a straight, white, Christian man might be necessary. Sentiments expressed in private conversations allude to fears that parts of the electorate may not be fully supportive of women or other diverse candidates for the presidency.
Interestingly, the report highlights that these comments have mostly been shared discreetly after the recent losses faced by Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris against Donald Trump.
One national Democratic strategist reflected, “I’m not ignoring the hundreds of losses that men have had…but is it really the right choice to nominate a woman?” This kind of thinking, according to Axios, may pose challenges for prospective candidates like Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and others who could be in the running.
Additionally, Axios pointed out that only a few potential candidates, such as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and California Governor Gavin Newsom fit the criteria mentioned.
These discussions arise amid earlier comments from Michelle Obama, who claimed that the nation might not be prepared to elect a female president, which adds another layer to this ongoing debate.
Reflecting on her beliefs, Michelle Obama once stated, “Don’t even think about me running because you’re not ready to elect a woman.” This sentiment was echoed recently by President Obama during a podcast, reiterating the barriers women still face in the political landscape.
