On Wednesday, a group of House Democrats called on Israel to reinstate humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.
“As proponents of strong US-Israel relations, we express our opposition to the current Israeli government’s policies that block humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza,” the group stated in their communication with Israeli ambassador Yechiel Leiter.
“We feel deeply distrustful and disappointed by this blockade, which began on March 2nd and has exacerbated Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, the worst since October 2023. These policies are morally wrong and contradict the shared democratic values of both nations,” the letter elaborated.
Led by California Democrats Sardo Carvajal and Ami Bella, the letter was also signed by Mark Pokan (Wisconsin), Pramila Jayapal (Washington), James Clyburn (South Carolina), Maxwell Frost (Florida), among others.
Reports indicate that Gaza has seen no aid for over two months due to the Israeli blockade. The area has suffered severe casualties, dire living conditions, and significant infrastructure damage due to military actions during the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict.
“We urge your government to restart aid to Gaza, and we will continue to support efforts for a revised ceasefire and hostage release agreement to ultimately bring an end to this conflict. The resolution of this issue is crucial for alleviating suffering on both sides and guiding the region toward stability and security.”
The Hill has reached out to the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC for further comments.
