Political Tensions in Virginia

Democratic figures have collectively chosen not to urge Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones to step down from his race. This decision comes after the emergence of unsettling text messages that imply violence against a Republican lawmaker and his family.

In an August 2022 text exchange with Republican Congresswoman Carrie Coyner, Jones hypothetically described a scenario involving choosing between two bullets and several notable figures, including former House Speaker Todd Gilbert. He stated he would shoot Gilbert twice in this scenario, as reported last Friday.

Moreover, he remarked on attending funerals for his political opponents, claiming he’d “be angry in their graves.” Jones even suggested that Gilbert and his wife deserved to witness their children suffer due to what he called “breeding little fascists.”

Coyner was visibly troubled by Jones’ words, requesting him to “please stop” discussing violence and death wishes directed at others.

While Jones did not contest the authenticity of his comments, he expressed remorse, stating, “Reading those words made me sick to my stomach. I am ashamed, embarrassed, and inconvenienced.” He has since reached out to Gilbert to extend a personal apology.

However, the situation escalated further when Coyner revealed additional disturbing remarks from Jones during a recent conversation. She recounted that he suggested that a few police officers dying could potentially deter others from committing acts of violence.

Coyner argued that his beliefs regarding qualified immunity for police officers could lead to negative public policies. “You remove qualified immunity, and police officers will act differently,” she asserted.

In response to these allegations, Jones denied making the statements as recounted by Coyner, stressing he respects the safety of law enforcement and appreciates their service.

Despite the uproar surrounding his comments justifying violence, many Republicans have voiced concerns and encouraged Jones to retract from the race. Although some Democrats have criticized his remarks, no one has suggested he should withdraw from his candidacy.

Attorney General Jason Miyares remarked, “I think it’s a test for Virginia,” expressing that the current situation cannot be overlooked. He noted the lack of decisive action from the Democratic Party, stating, “While some liberal commentators say he should withdraw, Democrats seem to be balancing condemnation without taking significant steps.”

When questioned about his potential actions regarding Jones’ campaign, Senator Tim Kaine remarked that nothing could justify such “indefensible words.” Similar sentiments were echoed by Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger and other officials, but none have specifically called for Jones to step down.
