Democrats face increasing pressure to support Homeland Security as the US engages with Iran.

The U.S. is currently facing funding issues for the Department of Homeland Security, which is crucial in battling terrorist threats, particularly amidst rising tensions. This situation has raised alarms among Republican leaders.

“This is not the time for games,” said House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) while speaking to Fox News. This comes as Iran has pledged to retaliate aggressively, criticizing the U.S. for coordinating attacks on Iran alongside Israel.

“If this doesn’t motivate my Democratic colleagues, I honestly don’t know what will,” Crawford expressed, highlighting the precarious global situation and the deadlock among Democrats regarding extra funding for essential agencies.

Republicans have been pressuring Democrats to resolve a funding freeze for DHS that has been in effect since February 14.

Crawford, as part of a select group known as the Group of Eight, which includes four Republicans and four Democrats, often participates in highly confidential congressional meetings.

Since mid-February, Democrats have stalled additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

The U.S. military action against Iran, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, started right after many DHS federal employees saw their first significant pay cuts due to the funding halt.

Democrats are leveraging a filibuster in the Senate to obstruct funding that includes extensive immigration policy reforms, even though a funding bill has already cleared the House.

In the wake of tragic events involving the shootings of anti-ICE protesters in Minneapolis, the Trump administration has ended the related Metro Surge operation in Minnesota.

Recently, the White House put forth a counterproposal to Democrats.

Among the hurdles in negotiations are Democratic requests for judicial warrants for immigration raids and a prohibition on federal agents wearing masks—both points Republicans regard as non-negotiable.

Current funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection is secured under the One Big Beautiful Bill, but other crucial DHS divisions, like the Transportation Security Administration and the Coast Guard, are not fully funded.

Despite rising concerns regarding funding for Homeland Security, Democrats appear largely focused on the shutdown.

“They initiated conflict with Iran, something that wasn’t requested by most Americans, merely as a pretext for ICE to act without restraint against American lives and even against schools,” Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) remarked on social media.

Republicans need just a few senators from the opposing party to shift their stance. Both chambers of Congress are set to reconvene this week.

“When the Senate meets next week, addressing the funding for the Department of Homeland Security should be the top priority,” said Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) on social media.

He stressed that “Defending the homeland shouldn’t be a partisan issue; it’s essential.” referring directly to Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, known as the longest-serving dictator, was killed recently during these rising tensions.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) also expressed his views, stating, “Congress has approved numerous requests from Democrats. The least they can do is ensure funding for homeland security.”

Additionally, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) emphasized on social media that given the Middle Eastern crisis and potential threats from Iran and its affiliates, it’s crucial for Senate leaders to withdraw their opposition to DHS funding and expedite the funding bill.
