Democrats Plan to Protest, Disrupt Netanyahu Speech to Congress

Democrats are planning to disrupt Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to a special joint session of Congress scheduled for July 24, in an unprecedented display of hostility toward the democratically elected leader of a close American ally.

In 2015, when Republicans urged Netanyahu to oppose then-President Barack Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, 56 Democrats boycotted the speech. This time, Axios Reports“Democrats plan to do more than boycott”

The proposals include press conferences, rallies and events with families of those held hostage by Hamas, many of whom feel Netanyahu has not done enough to secure the release of their loved ones.

In a sign of how extensive and high-level these discussions are, former House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D.C., told Politico that he was at one counterprogramming conference.

One House member said several progressive lawmakers were planning to attend the speech and disrupt it.

The speech may be especially awkward given that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called earlier this year for Netanyahu to be ousted in new elections. The Biden administration has sought to undermine the Israeli leader since his election in November 2022, except for a brief period before Oct. 7 last year when Israel and Saudi Arabia were close to a peace deal.

Netanyahu, like most Israelis, opposes the creation of a Palestinian state, which the Biden administration has promoted as a result of the war started by Hamas, and has aligned itself with the anti-Israel “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions” movement and initiated sanctions against right-wing Israelis.

Republican leaders, particularly House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), pushed for an invitation to Netanyahu as a show of solidarity with Israel and as a contrast to the administration’s public criticism of the Israeli government.
