Democrats’ poll numbers are dropping, but James Carville insists ‘we’re winning elections’

Despite a notable increase in voter turnout this year, Democratic hopes appear to be dwindling. Veteran strategist James Kerrville, however, remains optimistic, highlighting recent electoral victories for his party. “We can’t discount those who win elections,” he remarked during an interview.

Democrats have found themselves struggling politically since last November, following Republican victories in the presidential and Senate races, which solidified their majority. This shift was particularly significant among traditional Democratic voters, including Black and Hispanic demographics, as well as younger voters.

A new poll reveals a concerning trend; only about a third of Democrats feel optimistic about their party’s future, a steep decline from around 60% last July. In contrast, Republican optimism has risen from 47% to 55% recently.

Since Donald Trump’s return to prominence, the Democratic Party has been re-energizing, urging leaders to take a firmer stand against his controversial policies. This frustration is directed not just at Republicans but also at members of their own party who are seen as too passive.

The latest ratings reflect this discontent. A recent survey indicates that only 41% of voters hold a favorable view of Democrats, marking an all-time low in the Fox News polling, while Republican favorability stands at 44%.

Historically, Democrats have not fared well in various national surveys, often finding themselves in negative territory. Even a Gallup poll conducted last month showed confidence in Democratic congressional leadership at a mere 25%.

Despite these challenges, Kerrville points to recent successes, such as John Ewing Jr.’s election as Omaha’s first Black mayor, defeating a longstanding Republican. Democrats have also performed strongly in special elections across several states, flipping red Senate seats in both Iowa and Pennsylvania.

Looking ahead, Kerrville emphasized the upcoming gubernatorial election in Virginia as a critical moment for the party. “Let’s see what happens in Virginia,” he said confidently, asserting, “We’re going to win that.”
