Democrats' reaction to the SCOTUS decision on child sex changes shows they haven't grasped the lessons from the 2024 election defeat.

In a recent poll from Marquette Law School, 63% of Americans believe Democrats are at a disadvantage, while a survey conducted by YouGov indicated a 58.3% disapproval rating for the party as of May 25th.

This negative perception among Democrats seems to stem from their reaction to a Supreme Court ruling on United States vs. Skulmetti, which upheld Tennessee’s ban on using puberty blockers and gender reassignment surgeries for minors. This ruling indicates, at least according to some, that such laws resonate with a significant part of the American populace.

A related Washington Post KFF survey from this year found that 57% of respondents consider their gender to be biologically determined, with 68% opposing puberty blockers for minors and 58% against hormone treatments for teens. Another poll conducted by Nork at the University of Chicago just before the 2024 election revealed that 54% of participants support laws limiting minors’ access to gender-altering medications and surgeries.

Additionally, a Center Square analysis indicated that only 29% of voters support the idea that doctors should prescribe puberty blockers to children with parental consent. Notably, 47% of those surveyed believe these blockers should not be given to minors under any circumstances.

Democrats appear to be increasingly aware of the public’s disapproval when it comes to invasive medical interventions for children. Gilberto Hinojosa, who recently stepped down as chairman of the Texas Democrats, pointed out that the party’s messaging often fails to connect with the average American.

In a political landscape marked by shifting perspectives, a poll by the American Principles Project showed that 52% of voters who were aware of Kamala Harris’s support for gender changes in minors are now likely to vote for Donald Trump.

Terry Schilling, president of American Principles Project, argued that the Democratic Party’s stance on gender issues poses a significant political vulnerability that Republicans ought to capitalize on. He pushed for continued pressure on Democrats regarding their extreme positions.

Even amid increasing criticism surrounding the consequences of gender ideology, it seems Democrats maintain their support for such policies, particularly concerning children. Senator Ed Markey articulated concern that the Supreme Court’s decision has emboldened anti-trans rhetoric, claiming it stands against the rights of transgender Americans.

Other Democrats, including Chuck Schumer and Cory Booker, echoed similar sentiments, asserting that the ruling legitimizes discrimination against children seeking medical care related to gender identity.

Representative Sarah McBride, formerly Tim McBride, expressed that the decision undermines the abilities of healthcare providers to assist vulnerable young people. She, along with others, emphasized the fight isn’t over.

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the ruling, framing it as harmful to children who require care. The argument, however, remains contentious, with critics suggesting that so-called “gender-affirming care” often exacerbates confusion rather than alleviating it.

In 2020, an independent review led by Dr. Hilary Cass in the UK raised concerns about the efficacy of gender-change procedures in minors, suggesting a lack of strong evidence supporting their mental health benefits. Various studies have also indicated that hormonal treatments for adolescents may entail significant risks, including impacts on bone density.

In the realm of public dialogue, there seems to be a divide where major discussions around gender finally recognize the complexities and potential hazards involved, especially about informed consent.

Alligh Marre, executive director of the American Parents Coalition, noted that many on the left appear to align themselves with radical gender activists, often at the expense of children’s well-being. Additionally, he made a call for bipartisan support in protecting children from irreversible decisions about their bodies.

As the political landscape evolves, the implications of the recent ruling may serve as a litmus test for party alignments and public opinion, particularly as more states look to implement similar laws to Tennessee’s.
