Democrats Accused of Hypocrisy on Tax Issues by Trump’s White House
This week, the White House labeled Democrats as “affordability crooks,” suggesting that they would have willingly imposed the largest tax increase in U.S. history on Americans. This critique aims to dismantle the recent narrative that Democrats are genuinely focused on affordability.
On “Tax Day,” April 15, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt highlighted how President Trump and the Republican Party claimed to have saved Americans significant sums, staying true to their promises.
“As demonstrated this tax season, President Trump’s tax cuts for working families have returned historic amounts of money to Americans,” she remarked, accompanied by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Small Business Secretary Kelly Loeffler.
Levitt noted that last Independence Day, President Trump enacted the largest tax cut ever aimed at middle-class and working Americans, which also includes a widely favored no-tax rule on tips.
“We’ve also achieved unprecedented tax cuts for small businesses, farmers, workers, and families. Tax Day has arrived, and the data shows these cuts are remarkable,” she said, adding that 53 million tax filers have utilized at least one of Trump’s notable new tax policies. Moreover, she mentioned that the average refund for this season exceeds $3,400.
Bessent expanded on these figures, indicating that over 45% of taxpayers have taken advantage of significant policies such as the tip tax exemption and tax credits related to overtime and auto loans for American-made vehicles.
Furthermore, 5 million households have registered for Trump accounts for their children, among whom 1.2 million qualify for a $1,000 bonus.
Levitt emphasized that the Trump administration has issued more tax refunds in a single year than ever before in U.S. history, contradicting the story that Democrats are trying to convey.
“President Trump and Congressional Republicans have consistently believed that Americans know best how to manage their finances, but it’s crucial to remember that every Democrat in Congress opposed these tax refunds,” she stated.
She pointed out that media reports often overlook this and other significant aspects relating to the advantages of Trump’s tax cuts, warning that if Democrats had succeeded in blocking the bill, Americans would have encountered nearly a $4 trillion tax increase.
She elaborated that, under Democratic proposals, the average taxpayer could have faced a tax hike of about “22 percent.”
Levitt asserted, “Congressional Democrats have repeatedly shown themselves to be affordability fraudsters who believe the government deserves more of Americans’ hard-earned money. This administration, alongside Republicans, fundamentally believes that Americans should be able to retain a greater portion of their paychecks. This is a vital distinction for families to remember.”
Notably, in July 2025, House Speaker Mike Johnson managed to pass his “big, beautiful bill” by a narrow vote of 218-214, with all Democrats opposing it, as documented by the House clerk’s records.
President Trump cautioned Democrats last year that rejecting tax cuts would likely cost them support among Americans. With midterm elections nearing, Democrats are casting themselves as champions of affordability, perhaps hoping the public overlooks the inflationary policies of the Biden administration and their votes against measures to financially benefit citizens.
Kamala Harris, who previously campaigned for president, appears to be one of those wishing for a short memory among Americans. She often raises concerns about rising gas prices but seems forgetful regarding the Biden administration’s handling of escalating inflation and record-high gas costs.
