Democrats who enforced strict measures during COVID now label Trump's deportations as dictatorial

A Democrat known for strict Covid lockdowns is now caught up in controversies regarding President Donald Trump, specifically as he attempts to shield undocumented immigrants, some of whom have committed further offenses in the U.S., from the administration’s immigration enforcement actions. There have been significant protests across the nation, particularly against the push for deportation. It’s interesting, isn’t it? Just a few weeks back, there was a riot in Los Angeles following Trump’s policies targeted at immigrants, with demonstrators taking to the streets and even burning vehicles.

As the situation unfolds, the left has criticized Democrat Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass for allegedly overstepping their authority by deploying National Guard troops to California in response to unrest and violence. Newsom labeled Trump’s military actions as “authoritarian use of military soldiers against civilians,” asserting, “Donald Trump is not the king and does not exceed the law.”

A judge, accused of aiding undocumented immigrants in evading ice, expressed disbelief that he could “avoid the ice.” Meanwhile, more Democrats are accusing the administration of portraying Trump as a king and using the allegations to address the country’s illegal immigration issues.

This month, Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif) disrupted a press conference held by Homeland Security Secretary Christa Noem, referring to the recent riot in L.A. as “mostly peaceful.” Interestingly, federal agents temporarily detained Padilla after he attempted to approach Noem during the event and, he claimed, he was “handcuffed” for asking questions. It’s concerning, isn’t it? He tweeted about the incident, suggesting that if this is how the Trump administration treats U.S. senators, one can only imagine how they treat immigrants behind the scenes.

In solidarity, many Democratic politicians, including Newsom, rallied behind Padilla to condemn Trump’s alleged authoritarianism. Newsom expressed outrage, labeling the administration’s tactics “outrageous, dictatorial, and shameful,” demanding an immediate change. Padilla’s demonstration came shortly after Senator Lamonica Mciver (D-N.J.) faced federal charges for allegedly assaulting immigration and customs enforcement officers at a detention center in New Jersey.

In an interesting twist, McQuiver called the charges “political threats,” claiming she was simply there to do her job. Similarly, she also confronted New York City Director Brad Lander, who was arrested for obstructing ice operations during a protest. McQuiver characterized the situation as a frightening reflection of current events in the U.S.

Looking Back to the Covid Era

It’s curious how Democratic leaders now portray Trump as a significant risk to freedom, yet it was these very politicians who implemented strict lockdowns during the pandemic, which severely impacted both the economy and mental health. Newsom, for instance, introduced some of the harshest restrictions in the country. Citizens were ticketed, even arrested, for visiting closed beaches, while he himself celebrated his birthday at a lavish restaurant.

Back then, Padilla supported Newsom’s decisions, applauding his statewide face mask mandate. There was a push for Americans to stay home and maintain social distancing, yet he argued undocumented workers were essential, deserving a path to citizenship. It’s a contradiction, really.

In New York, Lander also recommended stringent measures during the pandemic, urging the closures of businesses and schools. He even labeled social distancing ineffective without mandates. Reflecting on the past, one can’t help but notice the irony: Democrats who once enforced heavy restrictions are now vocal critics of Trump’s immigration policies, framing them as authoritarian.
