Washington Post columnist Katherine Rumpel on Friday denounced Democrats for being less aggressive in criticising President Donald Trump's tariffs.
With a new work, The economics columnist argued Liberal lawmakers are saying they don't meet the tariff threat due to “Meerimus” concerns.
“This was Meeramas' criticism of President Donald Trump's trade war from many Democrats last week, and they're awkwardly triangulated between beating Trump's devastating ideas and promoting their own equally vibrant ideas.

Explaining how bad the tariffs are, Rampel said it would “increase the annual cost of a typical household by $2,700,” and for them “the risk of a recession has skyrocketed, businesses are beginning to strike workers, and once-closed allies are turning us over the birds.”
She declared that democratic lawmakers should spend outdoor days on this, but not.
“If this is the curse of the US economy, it should be wild for Democrats. Instead, Democrats are blowing their fortunes,” she said. Yes, these specific tariffs are expensive and regressive, but somehow they do not present such a drawback when Democrats impose tariffs. ”
Rampel noted how the party appears to be inconsistent with past tariffs, pointing out how it “attacked” the Trump administration's tariffs in the middle of 2018 and in the 2020 presidential elections, just before it adopted them as their own.

As the columnist said, former President Biden “has (almost) expanded all of Trump's existing tariffs” even after earlier criticising him. “In some cases he expanded them or replaced them with slightly different trade barriers. He did so with vigorous support from his party,” she wrote.
Lampel then tore multiple Democrat figures with more subtle talk about Trump's tariffs, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer D-mich, about the recent tariffs on President Trump.
Whitmer, while carefully criticizing Trump's tariffs, acknowledges and understands the president's “motivation behind the tariffs,” and agrees that Trump “needs to make more things in America.”
Rampell criticised the tariffs but accused Whitmer of not offering real alternatives to them.
“On Wednesday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (d) gave a speech criticizing Trump for wielding tariffs like “hammers.” When she asked how she would develop differently, she said, “I don't know how I enacted them.”

The columnist also D-Massed Senator Elizabeth Warren as he criticised Trump's tariffs while supporting Biden. She writes that Warren's “The real problem with Trump's tariffs is that businesses use them as 'price gouging' and excuses for profit. The stock market genocide suggests investors don't agree that tariffs will make a profit.
She also accused “left-handed populist thinkers” of just criticizing Trump because tariffs are not being used in their agenda. Additionally, Lampel said the party has returned to the “corner” of the topic.
The columnist concluded her point by arguing that “Democrats should stop pulling their punches” because “Americans hate Trump's tariffs.”
“What the country needs is a clear, completely corrupt condemnation of pandaring protectionism,” she said.
