Controversy Over California Congressman’s Sneaker Joke

A playful remark from a Democrat in California has sparked outrage among observers.

In a recent fundraising effort, Congressman Derek Tran (D-Calif.) flaunted some custom sneakers featuring a design reminiscent of the popular Jordans. However, the issue lies in the fact that these shoes bear the House seal on the heel, which seems to breach House ethics guidelines.

Tran, who represents areas of Los Angeles and Orange County, revealed his love for sneakers in a campaign email, declaring himself a “huge sneakerhead.” He mentioned, “While I wear a suit and tie to work in Congress, rocking Air Force 1s around the Capitol and on my way home has become my calling card,” showcasing his blue-and-yellow sneakers with a caption that read, “Custom. For members only.”

He refers to himself as “California’s most vulnerable House Democrat,” urging supporters to “keep these sneakers on the House floor.” His email also included a call to action for contributions, suggesting, “Contribute $3 today to help keep them walking the halls of Congress.”

Tran narrowly defeated former Republican Representative Michelle Steele in the last election.

The right-leaning watchdog group, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, claims that Tran not only breached House rules but may have violated the law as well.

In a letter to the Office of Congressional Action, they stated, “The law is very clear: Members cannot use official government resources, especially for non-official business. An official House seal should not be put on personal items.” They stressed, “Using the House Seal for political fundraising is explicitly prohibited.”

Executive Director Kendra Arnold has called for an “immediate investigation.” She stated, “Members of Congress are not permitted to use official resources to raise campaign funds. The House Seal is not meant to be a political tool. This case’s clear facts warrant swift action.”

Tran is currently facing several Republican challengers as he campaigns for re-election this year, including Westminster Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen and City Councilor Amy Van West.

On the fundraising side, the California Democratic Party is quite active, with Tran reportedly raising over $3 million in 2025 alone, according to FEC records.

Attempts to reach Tran’s office for a comment did not yield a response.
